CLANS
In the multi-player Civilization community clans are the same as teams in any game or sport. There are several established clans that exist in Civilization. KC, or the Knights of Civilization is the oldest clan.
These are the other established clans.

Clans exist for many reasons. They may be formed because of a group of players who are from the same country or speak the same language. Others form simply because the members have similar interests and attitudes.
They are a good way for a group of players who get along well to play together and get to know each other. They help make learning the game easier by clan members talking to each other and exchanging ideas through writing in forums like this one.
Clan members play lots of games in the Civilization Lobby without each other, but also try to make an effort to play together as a team to have more fun with their "clan mates". This helps players become better because it is easier to discuss strategies and tactics with people you know and feel comfortable with than with strangers.
Clans also exist in order to compete in the Civilization Clan Championships or the "CCC". There are other tournaments that take place from time to time known as the Clan Ongoing Tournament or "COT". These tournaments are times when clans really come together. They train and practice together a great deal in order to have a very strong team ready to play against other clans. Announcements about such tournaments can be found on the ladder forums.

There are two ways to become involved in a clan: either by starting one, or by joining one that already exists. Starting a clan can take a very long time so most players look to join clans that already exist. On the ladder forums, people sometimes advertise the start of a new clan or clans post that they are looking for new members.

Many Civilization players don't play for clans for different reasons, but those who do usually find that it makes the gaming experience more rewarding through making new friends and becoming overall better players.
